Framing with Foam

Construct and decorate a photo frame using colored foam, collage materials, and magnetic tape.

Materials:

  • Colored craft foam, two colors
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Lightweight collage material, such as beads, sequins, small foam pieces, or small buttons
  • Magnetic tape strip, cut into pieces
  • Photo, small

Before Beginning:

Trace a shape onto craft foam or create your own shape. Cut a pair of shapes for each frame, one piece from each color of foam. Cut a smaller shape out of the middle of one of the pieces. This becomes the top of the frame.

Make Your Great Gift:

  1. Glue collage materials on the outer frame piece.
  2. Glue the outer frame piece to the back counterpart. Leave a slit between the two pieces at the top to slide in the photo or picture.
  3. After the frame is dry, put a strip of magnetic tape on the back of the frame.
  4. Use the cut-out center portion pieces as a pattern for trimming the photo before it is inserted into the frame.

Helpful Hints:

  • Thin craft foam works best. Foam shelf liner could be substituted.
  • Trace the child’s hand for a personal touch, and cut out the center of her palm for the photo.

Seasonal Suggestion:

  • Use simple people shapes with a circle cut out for the photo. Decorate with wallpaper scraps, cloth scraps, ribbons and yarn. Wonderful for Father’s Day!

Stress Ball Sock

Turn a tube sock into a tension-release gift.

Materials:

  • Nontoxic permanent markers in a variety of colors
  • New, white, adult-size, knee-length athletic sock
  • Sand
  • Two zipper-seal plastic sandwich bags
  • Plastic tray
  • Masking tape

Before Beginning:

Stretch the sock tight and tape it to the plastic tray.

Make Your Great Gift:

  1. Draw on the sock with a variety of nontoxic permanent markers. (Protect clothing!)
  2. Scoop sand into a plastic sandwich bag. Fill the bag three-quarters full.
  3. Place the bag of sand inside another sandwich bag, and tape closed.
  4. Place the sealed bag of sand inside the toe of the sock.
  5. Tie a knot in the ankle of the sock to secure the bags of sand in place.
  6. Squeeze the newly created stress ball, and enjoy how the sand feels.

Helpful Hints:

  • If sand is not available, other materials, such as small gravel or salt can be used instead.
  • Send this gift with directions for what to do if the sock begins to leak its contents. Instruct the recipient to simply untie the sock and place the broken bag of sand inside a new sandwich bag.

Seasonal Suggestion:

  • The Stress Ball Sock makes a great gift for Father’s Day.
