Instructions

1. Explain to the children what
nocturnal animals are. Read books
about nocturnal animals (see the
list on this page) and then engage
the children in a discussion about
nocturnal animals.
2. Have the children pick which
nocturnal animal they are going to
pretend to be during nap time.
3. When it is time to rest, children
can lie on their mats and mimic
the animals of their choice
through body position. For
example, children who pick foxes
could rest curled up, and those
who pick lions could lie on their
backs.
4. Additionally, children can use their
imaginations and decide the best
way for their chosen animal to sleep.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Do the children understand what "nocturnal" means?
* Can the children explain why a creature might be nocturnal?
