What Does a Lion Say?

Story Starter Activity

A great on-the-go game for children ages 4 and up.

  • Work as a team to build a story, one line at a time.
  • One person makes up a sentence that could begin a story. The next person continues the story by adding another sentence.
  • Keep taking turns until the story is finished. If you want, dictate it or write it down to read agfain later.

This activity is a great way to practice dictating stories or experiences, listen to others with understanding, and use language to communicate ideas.

Material from What Does a Lion Say?: And Other Playful Language Games by the Between the Lions® Staff (page 76), ISBN 978-0-87659-147-5.

Instructions

1. Put out several colors of fingerpaint and give each child an art tray.
2. Encourage the child to create a design.
3. When he is finished, help him carefully place a large piece of paper over the
painted area of the tray.
4. Gently press the paper down onto the paint so that it absorbs as much paint
as possible.
5. Slowly lift the paper. The painting on the tray transfers to the paper.
6. Hang it to dry and mount it for display.
More to do
Instead of fingerpaint, use tempera paint. Then, encourage children to make a
design in the paint using different objects, such as a potato masher, comb, or
bubble wrap. Press a piece of paper onto the paint as above.
