Instructions
1. Say the following rhyme any
time during the day when you
have a few extra moments.
2. Begin by talking about all the
ways children know someone
is at the door, including
doorbells, door knockers,
knocking by hand, or tapping
on a door. Also ask how they
know who is at the door
(peepholes, windows, storm
doors, door chains, and so on).
3. Read the following action
rhyme, modeling the motions
for the children.
There's a knocking at the door (knock on desk)
Who can it be? (shrug shoulders, hold hands up palm face up)
Mom looks through the peephole (curl fingers and look through a peephole)
Who does she see?
A kangaroo hopping big up and downs? (hop)
A skater on ice skates spinning around? (spin)
A woodpecker tapping, rat-a-tat-tat? (clap hands in rhythm)
A tall baseball player swinging his bat? (swinging motion)
The neighbor's little dog, coming to bark? (arf!)
Look, look! It's my friend! We'll play in the park! (cheer)
4. Read the rhyme again so the children can do the motions with you.
More to do Invite a guest speaker to tell the children about safety and what to do when
someone comes to the door.
