Materials

  • variety of objects that produce exciting sounds and/or tape recordings of exciting sounds (a train whistle, dinner bell, foghorn, jackhammer, waterfall, squawking macaw, stadium of people clapping, herd of elephants bellowing, and so on)

What to do

1. Play one of the sounds, making sure it is loud enough to get everyone's attention.

2. Play the sounds again and talk about them because the children will probably be very curious about them.

3. Possible discussion questions are:

  • What is making that sound?
  • Where would you hear that sound?
  • Can you make a sound like that?

4. This is a great way to grab children's attention.
