Materials

pieces of string between 10" to 14"

paint

paint pans or pie tins

construction or drawing paper

Instructions

1. Put a knot at one end of each string for the child to hold on to.
2. Encourage the children to make their "string worms" dance in the paint.
3. Show the children how to place their strings on a piece of paper with the
knot off the edge of the paper. If desired, use brown paper to represent
soil.
4. Ask them to fold their papers in half carefully.
5. Hold the paper down firmly as the child gently pulls the string. Ask the
child to put the knot around the edge of the paper when pulling the
string.
6. Open the paper to see the worm dance design.
7. Let the children repeat this with a couple of colors until there are lots of
worm lines on the paper.
More to do Remind the children to be gentle with real worms and explain that it would
be inappropriate to use a real worm for this activity.
Science: Have real worms in a jar of soil for the children to observe.
