Materials

Wood scraps

Wood glue

Small sponge

Markers or paint and paintbrushes, optional

Instructions

1. Give each child an assortment of wood scraps. Encourage the children to arrange the scraps ina variety of designs.

2. When they are satisfied with an arrangement, have them glue the pieces together in a woodsculpture.

3. Wipe away any extra glue, then place the sculpture where it will not be disturbed and let it dryovernight.

4. The following day, let the children color or paint their sculpture, if they choose.

5. Invite the children to name their work of art.More to doField trip: Visit an outdoor sculpture garden or a sculpture exhibit at a local gallery.Language: Use the sculpture as a "story starter," and encourage the children to compose a storysurrounding their sculpture.More art: Decorate the sculpture with collage materials once it has dried.
