Materials

large pan or plastic tub

snow

plastic sheet or vinyl shower curtain

thermometer

large calendar

Instructions

1. Fill a large pan or plastic tub
with snow and place it on
a plastic sheet or
vinyl shower
curtain. Use a
thermometer
to measure the
temperature of the snow and record it on a
sheet of paper.
2. Let the snow melt, and then measure the temperature of the melted snow.
Write the temperature next to the temperature of the snow, and talk with
the children about the difference in temperatures.
3. For more practice with thermometers, check the
temperature on a thermometer placed
outside the classroom window. Record it
on the calendar.
4. At the end of each week,
compare the high and low
temperatures for the week
by creating a bar graph out of the
information on the calendar.
