Cardboard or poster board

Aluminum foil

Styrofoam shapes

Instructions

1. Beforehand, place an extra-large piece of cardboard or poster board on a table to form the baseof the winter landscape. Cut aluminum foil in irregular shapes to represent lakes and ponds.

2. Give the children a variety of Styrofoam shapes, glue, and toothpicks. Invite them to create awinter scene by making buildings, snowmen, snow forts, or igloos.

3. Encourage the children to place their Styrofoam creations on the winter landscape.More to doDramatic play: Invite the children to play with their winter landscape using imaginary charactersor small figures.Math: Sort Styrofoam balls by size.More art: Help the children stand twigs or evergreen branches in Styrofoam to resemble treesand position them around the landscape. Mold animals from clay and add them to the winterlandscape. Create ice cube paintings.
