Materials

Chart paper and marker Small clear plastic cups

Water Spoons, one per cup

Various substances to test: salt, sugar, baking soda, flour, sawdust, Styrofoam pieces, etc.

Instructions

1. In advance, make up a chart labeled "Dissolves" and "Doesn't Dissolve" with pictures for thechildren to record their findings.

2. The children choose one substance and spoon it into a cup of water.Water5183. After gently stirring, they decide if the substance dissolved or not, then place the cup of water on theclassification chart.

4. When the children have completed testing all theavailable substances, ask them to look at the cups again and note any changesthat may have occurred. Invite them to stir the water a second time and see if anythingchanges.
