drawing or construction paper (1 sheet per child)

markers and crayons

cut-out pictures of houses, farms, ranches, igloos, and other homes

child-safe scissors

glue sticks

Instructions

l Display the map on a large wall. Mark your location.
l Write a letter requesting postcards from the places the children's parents,
family members, and grandparents travel.
What To Do
1. At the beginning of the school year, send a letter home with the children
requesting postcards. (See "Preparation").
2. As the postcards come in, read them to the children and put a number on the
postcard, using a label.
3. Mark the location on the map with the same number.
4. Display the cards around the map.
5. Discuss the various
places with the
children.

To assess the children's
learning, consider the
following:
l Can the children
locate their
hometown or city on
a map?
l Can the children
match the number on the postcard to the location?
