Instructions
l Send out an invitation to each of the families and invite them to a classroom
potluck from around the world.
l Assign each family a country to bring a food from and then let the family
decide what to bring for a potluck. Offer recipes if needed.
l Set out flags and maps of the various countries from which the children's
families are bringing food.
What To Do
1. Talk with the children about how different countries have distinct cuisines.
Ask the children if they have ever eaten Mexican food, Ethiopian food, Italian
food, Chinese food, and so on. Discuss these foods with the children.
2. When the children's families arrive with the food, direct them to their specific
locations, and invite the children to sample the different types of foods.
3. Listen to the children describe and react to the foods. Write down their
reactions, and after the children all sample the food, gather them together to
talk about what they ate.
4. Set up a simple chart with the names of the countries and the food. Give the
children stickers, and invite them to put their stickers on the section of the
chart with the food they tasted.
5. With the children, look at the chart and discuss which country's food has the
largest number of stickers.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children say the names of the foods they sampled and the countries
those foods come from?
l Can the children look at the chart and determine which food was the one that
the most children tasted?
