Materials
pictures of moths and butterflies resting on plants or tree trunks
actual moth and butterfly on plant stems in ventilated jars (optional)
Instructions
* List five children's names on each colored sheet of paper. Title each paper
with one day of the week.
* Each morning display five aluminum cans on a table or shelf.
* Set the carpet square on the floor and the recycling bin nearby.
What to Do
1. Read one of the book selections listed below. With the children, discuss the
importance of recycling aluminum.
2. Ask the children if they ever drank from an aluminum can. Ask, "What do you
do with the can when you are done?" Allow time for the children to respond.
3. Invite five assigned children to stand in a line at front of the room.
4. Select a single child and teach the children the following chant and response:
Child: Good morning, friends.
Class: Good morning, _________. (class responds and fills in the child's name)
Child: Today, I'm going to recycle aluminum. (child sets can on the carpet
square, steps on the can and crushes it, then places it in the recycle bin)
Class: Thank you for taking care of our Earth!
5. Repeat the chant until all five children crush a can.
6. Continue with five new children each day as your young learners learn the
value and "fun" of recycling aluminum.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Do the children appreciate the need to recycle aluminum cans?
* Are the children able to take turns saying the chant and following directions?
