Instructions

* Display the beanbag insect toys in a basket.
* Display the small insect blankets in a pile next to the basket.
What to Do
1. Teach the children the following song:
Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Bug by Mary J. Murray
(Tune: "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star")
Twinkle, twinkle, little bug, I'll hold you and hug you tight.
You're so cute and fun to love. Twinkle, twinkle, little bug,
Time for rest, day or night. You're so cute and fun to love.
2. Just before rest time, invite the children to sing this song softly.
3. Move around the classroom with the butterfly net, touching the net on each
child's shoulder, signaling that child to go up and select an insect friend to
snuggle with during rest time.
4. Have each child quietly take one insect and one insect blanket, and carry
them to his resting place.
5. The song continues until every child is resting with an insect friend.
6. After rest time, invite the children to whisper their thoughts about their insect,
and then return the insects and the blankets to the basket.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Are the children able to recite the song from memory?
* Do the children choose different insects and blankets, or do they have
individual ones to which they are partial?
* How well do the children wait for their turns to pick their insect pals?
