Instructions

l Prepare "hello" signs in the different languages that your children speak and
other languages that are easy to say and remember. Remember to write the
name of the language on the sign as well. Make one sign per child.
l Here are some examples of how to say "hello" in foreign languages:
Chinese: Nihao ("nee-how")
French: Bonjour ("bohn-zhoor")
Hawai'ian: Aloha
Italian: Ciao ("chow")
Spanish: Hola ("oh-lah")
What To Do
1. As the children arrive in the morning, give each child one of the translated
"hello" signs.
2. Explain to each child that the signs say "hello" in different languages. Help the
children pronounce the "hello" on the signs they are holding.
3. After all the children arrive, pair the children and have each pair hold their
signs up to one another and practice saying "hello" in the languages on
their partners' signs. Encourage the children to help one another with the
pronunciation.
4. After a little while, have the children form new pairs.
5. Show the children the world map or globe, and point out and describe the
countries that speak the languages they have been speaking.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children say "hello" in the languages on their signs?
l Can the children name the languages in which they are saying "hello"?
l Are the children able to help one another say "hello" in different languages?
