Materials
variety of tools (such as carpenter and household tools)
Instructions
1. Find pictures and patterns of children from around the world dressed to
express cultural diversity. Also find pictures of flags of different countries
(corresponding to the children in traditional dress).
2. Enlarge and copy the patterns onto 8 1/2 x 11" paper. Color the pages with
brightly colored markers.
3. Mount each page on a separate sheet of 9" x 12" construction paper, using
rubber cement (adult only). A border of paper will show around each page.
4. Label the name of the country on each page.
5. Make a 10" x 14" cover with the title "Around the World" and make a back
cover out of heavy poster board.
6. Laminate the pages and the covers for durability, and cut them out.
Assemble the pages and bind them in a binding machine or using a hole
punch and yarn.
7. Create a flag on oak tag for each country depicted in the book. Color the
flags, cut them out, and laminate them for durability. Back the flags with felt
for flannel board use.
8. Work with the children to match the flags to the children in the book and
display the flags on the flannel board. Show the children how to work with
this book on their own, and challenge them to find a flag for every country in
the book.
