Materials

fishing props (fishing hats, vest, fishing poles, and string)chairschild's wading pool filled with blue cellophanedie-cut fish from assorted colored foam sheetssmall plastic containers with a lid and handle (at least 4 to 6)assortment of plastic insects, worms, frogs, and snakeslabelscrayonscopy of tackle box chart (see illustration)

Instructions

1. Place the fishing props, chair, wading pool (filled with cellophane and die-cut fish) in the dramatic play area.

2. Provide plastic containers ("tackle boxes") filled with an assortment of plastic bugs, worms, frogs, snakes, and so on.

3. Let the children help label each box.

4. Encourage the children to visit the dramatic play area and pretend to fish. Have them open their tackle box and take out all the things in their box.

5. Ask them to sort and count the items in their tackle box and draw their findings on the chart.
