Instructions
If necessary, send a note home with the children asking parents to lend a
globe to the classroom for this activity.
What To Do
1. Set out the map and globe.
2. Talk with the children about the continent of North America. Show the
children the map of North America and challenge them to find the United
States, Mexico, and Canada.
3. Read the children a book about the countries in North America (see the list to
the left for suggestions).
4. Provide the children with markers, crayons, and colored pencils. Invite the
children to draw pictures about the countries in North America.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l If a child has a family member who was born and raised in Canada or
Mexico, ask if that person will attend class and talk with the children about
their experiences. Encourage the children to ask questions.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children identify the United States on a map of North America?
l Can the children name the other countries in North America?
l How well can the children draw the countries in North America?
