Instructions
* Create the following insect socks:
* Round bug: Make a sock ball by rolling a sock inside of itself. Cut out and
stitch two felt wings to each sock ball.
* Segmented worm: Stuff a longer sock with another sock. Stitch the end
closed. Knot several strands of yarn along the body, making many sections.
* Three-part insect: Stuff a sock and stitch it closed. Put two rubber bands
around the body, separating it into three parts.
* Funny bugs: Stuff colorful gloves or toe socks with stuffing or a sock and
stitch them closed.
What to Do
1. Gather the children outside or in a large open space.
2. Talk with the children about different kinds of insects. Ask the children how
various insects move and get around.
3. Show the children the various insect sock creations, and invite each child to
select one.
4. Ask the children to form a line. Explain that when you say "insects fly," the
children should toss their insects as far as they can.
5. After the children toss their insects, ask the children to find their insects and
stand where they landed. Ask the children to describe how their bugs flew.
6. Line up all the children behind you. Have them hold their insects high above
their heads and then follow you, making their insects "fly," as you run about
the large open area with the children trailing behind you.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Can the children tell you what affected the distances their insects could "fly"?
* Can the children describe their insects and count the number of sections the
insects' bodies have?
