Materials
die-cut circles in red, yellow, orange, green, and blue
clothespins, safety pins, or masking tape
Instructions
l Cut the melons into cubes small enough
for the children to eat.
l Divide the poster board into three
sections. Color each section to match one
of the melons: pink for watermelon,
orange for cantaloupe, and green for
honeydew. If desired, add a picture of
each melon.
What to Do
1. Show the children the three melons (or
pictures of the three melons).
2. Ask them to name the colors of the melons.
3. Discuss how the melons are the same and how they are different.
4. Provide each child with samples of all three melons. Have them taste the
melons and decide which one they like best.
5. Have each child write her name on a sticky note and place it on the poster
board in the section of the melon she likes best.
6. When all children have voted, discuss the results of the poll. Which melon
received the greatest number of votes? Which melon received the least
number of votes?
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Ask the children to identify the colors of the melons.
l Ask the children to practice writing their names again after the activity.
