Materials

Whole chicken, cooked

Stickers or pictures of 4 or 5 different animals, including a chicken

Instructions

1. After baking or boiling the whole chicken, remove the meat from the bones.

2. Wash and dry the bones well (microwaving helps the bones dry quickly).

3. Display the bones on a science table.

4. Discuss how scientists had trouble reassembling bones into the proper animal when they first discovered dinosaur bones.

5. Show the pictures of animals; one must be a chicken.

6. Children try to reassemble the bones and guess which animal the bones came from.

7. Record their guesses. Tell them there is a hint in the bones. (Birds are the only animal to have a wishbone. Children are usually familiar with that from Thanksgiving.)8. Reveal the correct answer.
