Easel paper
Pencils Large pieces of gray or black felt, two per child Sewing pins Scissors Yarn needles Yarn White felt squares or googly eyes Glue gun Pillow stuffingInstructions
What to do
1. Help the children draw a large whale on easel paper in pencil.
2. Lay two pieces of felt on top of one another and pin the paper pattern to the felt. Cut out the
whale shape.
3. Thread the yarn needles and show the children how to sew the two pieces of felt together. Sew
around the edge of the whale, leaving an opening where the stuffing will be inserted.
4. Glue a googly eye on each side of the whale using the glue gun (adult only); or, if you choose,
help the children cut circles for the eyes from white felt, then attach the eyes with the glue gun.
5. Invite the children to stuff the whale with pillow batting.
6. Stitch the opening with yarn.
More to do
Language and snack: Give each child 10 fish crackers, then have them make up a story about
how many fish a whale ate for dinner and invite them to eat that many crackers.
Math: Lay yarn across the playground in the actual dimensions of the whale. Guess and check
how many children can fit inside the outline.
