Materials
- Poster board
- Scissors
- Fabric scraps such as wool, canvas, faux suede and leather, vinyl, lightweight knits,
- and cotton material
- Glue
- Buttons, rickrack, and yarn
What to do
1. Beforehand, cut doll figures out of poster board that are approximately 20" to 24" (50 cm to 60 cm) tall and 10" (25 cm) wide. Cut one doll for every three or four children.
2. Divide the children into groups and assign them a particular kind of weather such as rainy and cool, snowy and cold, and sunny and hot. Let the children think about the clothing they would wear in that kind of weather.
3. Set out a wide assortment of fabric scraps and invite the children to choose the appropriate kind of fabric for their doll's clothing.
4. Help the children sketch a waistline and sleeve and pant length so they can readily position the clothing.
5. Provide them with scissors, then invite them to cut bits of the fabric and glue them to the doll.
6. When they are finished dressing the doll, ask them to attach buttons, rickrack, and yarn for the eyes, nose, mouth, and hair.
More to do
- More art: Decorate a clear plastic jar and set it outside for measuring rainfall.
- Science: Record the daily outdoor temperature on a colorful chart. Make a picture graph of the weather over a period of time.
