Instructions

1. Hold up a paper square and ask the children to identify the shape. Ask them
how many sides the shape has.
2. Tell the children they will be going on a Square Hunt. Explain to the children
that they will be going outside to look for squares.
3. Teach the children the following song:
We're Going On a Square Hunt by Laura Wynkoop
(Tune: "We're Going On a Bear Hunt")
Teacher: We're going on a square hunt.
Children: We're going on a square
hunt.
Teacher: We're going to look for
squares.
Children: We're going to look for
squares.
Teacher: Are you ready?
Children: Yes, we're ready!
Teacher: Let's take a walk.
Children: Let's take a walk.
Teacher: Do you see a square?
Children: Yes, we see a square!
Teacher: Where?
Children: There!
Teacher: We went on a square hunt.
Children: We went on a square hunt.
Teacher: And now we're done!
Children: And now we're done!
4. Once the children know the song, ask them to line up at the door and lead
them outside.
5. On the walk, encourage the children to point out the squares they see. Sing
"We're Going on a Square Hunt" while you walk with the children.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the child say how many sides a square has?
l Can the child recall the squares he spotted? Can he name the places where
he saw various squares?
