Instructions

* If you or a parent has a potted cactus, bring it into the classroom. Be careful
that the children don't touch it.
What to Do
1. Read one or more books about cacti. Do the children know where these
plants grow? If you are in a desert area, they will have a better understanding.
2. If you live in another area, explain about deserts. Talk about how desert plants
conserve water. Talk about how we can protect cacti by not taking them from
the desert. How are desert plants different from other plants?
3. Show the children the pictures in the books as you read them.
4. Encourage the children to talk about any experiences with cacti.
5. Have the children color the cactus picture.
6. Be sure the children understand they should never touch a cactus the spines
can hurt!
Assessment
Consider the following:
* When shown pictures of various cacti and other plants, can the children tell
you which are cacti?
* What can the children tell you about cacti?
* Do the children have ideas for how to protect these plants?
