Instructions
1. Try this activity when it's time to
transition to circle or group
time, or any time you want to
gather the class or capture their
attention.
2. Call children to the group area.
As children arrive, hand them a
square of bright fabric in one
solid color. Ask them to crouch
down on floor.
3. Hold up a square of fabric or a color. The children who hold that color fabric
square spring up like a kernel of popcorn popping and then crouch down
again. Repeat showing a second color, and watch the popcorn pop.
4. As more children arrive, hand out more squares of fabric.
5. Continue showing colors by holding up a different color or the same one.
Children pop up whenever their color is shown.
6. When more and more children gather, go faster, so that more children are
popping up and down.
Note: It's a good idea for each child to have his own square of carpet as a
starting place as well as a place to return.
7. Slow the popping down, and ask all the colors of popcorn to sit on their own
carpet squares.
8. If desired, chant the following poem while doing the transition activity.
Popcorn by MaryAnn Kohl
Pop. Pop. Pop. Pop. (normal voice)
Popping, popping.
Popping, popping,
Never stopping.
Pop. Pop. Very slow. (whispering voice, slower)
Popping, popping
Pop and go
Very slow.
Pop. Pop. (loud voice)
Everyone pop.
Popping, popping
Giant popping.
Pop. Pop. (tiny voice)
Baby pop.
Popping, popping
Tiny popping.
Pop. Pop. (ending, quiet voice)
Bye-bye popping.
Popcorn's ready,
We are stopping,
No more popping.
