Instructions

1. In advance, make a stack of activity cards labeled with movements such as jump, hop, turn around, touch your toes, clap, shrug your shoulders, touch your nose, and shake your hips.

2. Divide the children into two groups.

3. Have the first child from each group roll a die and say what the number is.

4. Write each child's number, spaced apart, on the board.

5. Turn over the top activity card and read what is says, "We're going to clap."6. The children from the first group use the number that was rolled by their team member (for example, a five) and say, "We clap (one, two, three, four, five) times," while performing the action.

7. The children from the other group go next, using the number their team member rolled.

8. With the help of the children, add the numbers together on a piece of paper or dry-erase board. Say, "Group one clapped five times and group two clapped two times. Together they clapped seven times." Write the equation5 + 2 = 7.

9. Have both groups clap seven times together.

10. Repeat so that all get a chance to roll the dice, using a different activity card each round.More to do Language and Literacy: Write the numbers as words under the numerals on the board so the children can learn word numbers for the numerals. For example: 5 + 2 = 7 five + two = seven
