Instructions

Set up a classroom post office equipped with the materials in the list to the
left. Add the job of mail carrier to your list of class jobs.
What To Do
1. Show the children several sample pieces of mail.
2. Ask the children if they can identify the address, return address, and stamp on
the mail. Help the children if necessary.
3. Discuss mail carriers and the process of mail delivery.
4. Tell the children they will create and deliver class mail.
5. Have the children make pictures for specific classmates and bring completed
pictures to the post office.
6. Help the children fold, stamp, and "address" their mail by adding the picture
of the child and table identifier. The return address is the name of the sender
with a table identifier.
7. As a group, sort the mail by address. Assign your first mail carrier. Then deliver
the mail and collect the pictures of the children for future use.
8. Allow several times each week for the class to make letters and for mail
delivery. Remind them to include both the "address" and a stamp.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l You can use stickers for stamps.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Do the children understand the basic function mail serves?
l Can the children explain how mail is sent and delivered?
l Can the children say who performs this task in the community?
