Materials

  1. Bucket of water
  2. Paintbrushes

Instructions

  1. Take a bucket of water and some paintbrushes outside on a hot day.
  2. Have children "paint" designs on sidewalks, brick walls, and paved play areas using plain water.
  3. Within a few minutes, the water paintings will begin to disappear. Talk about evaporation and how the warm sun evaporated the water into the air.
  4. Repeat the activity on a cool, cloudy day. Point out that the water paintings stay visible longer when the sun is not so hot.

More to do
Art: Mix a little bit of dry tempera paint in the water. Have children paint on white paper and
leave the paintings outside. The water will evaporate and leave traces of the tempera paint
behind.
