Instructions

* Make large chalk numbers in an empty playground or paved yard.
* Fill water guns or spray bottles with water.
What to Do
1. Show the children how to draw
numbers by squirting water
carefully around the chalk
numbers, making sure that they
start the number in the correct
place.
2. When the children have better
control of the water, challenge
them to draw water numbers
without the chalk outline to
follow.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* Some children simply do not have the motor skills to do this at four or even
five years old. If this is making them discouraged, ask these children to draw
you a water picture instead. This does not require nearly as much accuracy.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Does each child follow your instructions on making water numbers?
* Can the children concentrate long enough to complete several numbers?
* Do the children remember where to start when drawing each number?
