Materials

  1. 4 glasses, at least 5 1/2 " (13.5 cm) tall
  2. Pint (500 ml) measuring cup
  3. Metal spoon

Instructions

  1. Let the children know that today they will discover how sounds are made. Ask them to press their lips together in a straight line and push air out to make a sound much like a horse snorting. Discuss the "tickle" they felt and tell them that all sounds are made from vibrations.
  2. Fill the four glasses with the water amounts shown. You will want to try this ahead of time to verify the water amounts for your containers. Tap the filled glasses gently with the spoon. Ask the children to tell you which glasses make higher and lower sounds.
  3. Play the sequence for the "Sounds Song" and help the children sing the song to the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

Lots of things can make a sound,

More to do
Math: Put large numbers on the glasses and let the children try to play them.
Movement: Tape an outline of a hand to the table edge under glasses 1 and 2, and an outline of a foot under glasses 3 and 4. When the indicated glasses are tapped, children clap hand or stamp feet to keep the rhythm.
