Instructions

1. Tell the children that they will be planting a sunflower garden.

2. Let each child plant a sunflower seed. Encourage them to use their journals to write about the planting and guess what is going to happen.

3. Each week, check the plot and see what is happening with the seeds. Have the children continue to write and draw pictures about it in their journals.

4. When the plants are about a foot tall, take pictures of each student standing next to a sunflower. Measure the plant and the child and ask them to write the measurements in their journals.

5. Continue in this fashion, measuring and taking pictures every week. (The photos may be used in their journals or on a bulletin board.)6. Encourage the children to check their original estimations and compare them to what actually happened.

7. Encourage the children to write stories about their sunflowers.Tip: Use a digital camera and put the photos on a website. Parents can look at the photos and download them, if desired. For safety reasons, do not use children's names on the internet.
