Materials

3 ice cube trays

water

spoons

food coloring (red, yellow, and blue)

freezer

12 large, transparent plastic bowls

newspapers

Instructions

1. Fill three ice cube trays with water. Add red food coloring to the water in
one tray, yellow to the water in another tray, and blue to the water in the
third tray. Freeze to make colored ice cubes.
2. Remove the ice cube trays from the freezer. Fill the plastic bowls with
water.
3. Add colored ice cubes to each plastic bowl and stir them until they
dissolve.
4. Encourage the children to watch new colors emerge as the colored ice
cubes melt. (Red and yellow ice cubes will melt together to form orange;
yellow and blue ice cubes will melt and form green.)
5. Add different quantities of colored ice cubes to create different shades of
colors.
