Instructions
1. Take the children for a walk. Walk in the community around the school or justin the playground or even around the school on a rainy day.
2. As you walk, ask the children to do silly things. For example:* Take two big steps and three little steps.* Take three little steps, hop one time, and take three big steps.* Take one little step, and turn around two times.* Hop four times, and turn around one time.* Take three big steps forward and two big steps backward.
3. Count aloud as the children perform each action.
4. Let the children take turns telling the group silly things to do as you walk.
5. For older children, expand the activity by asking them to estimate how manysteps it will take to get from one spot to another (such as from a particulartree in the playground to the edge of the sandbox). After they make theirestimates, have them count the steps to see how close their estimates were.
6. Next ask them to estimate how many of your steps it will take. Will it takeyou more steps or fewer to go the same distance? Why? Again, have thechildren count your steps to see if they are correct.
