Materials

clay or playdough

paper

lemon juice

red or orange tempera paint

baking soda

liquid dish soap

cups for mixing

Instructions

* Earth Science Week is the second week of October.
1. Talk about volcanoes with the children. Show pictures, if available.
2. Encourage the children to form clay or playdough into a 1" tall mound.
3. Have them place their mounds onto paper.
4. Show the children how to make an indentation in the top of the clay to
make a "crater."
5. Mix baking soda and tempera paint in a cup. Let the children fill their
craters with this mixture.
6. In another cup, mix two parts lemon juice to one part dish soap.
7. Let the children the pour mixture into the craters and observe what
happens (the baking soda mixture will run over the top of the crater).
8. Let dry.
