Instructions

1. Place a small plastic bottle into the tub. (The tub will catch the runoff.)2. Help the child pour two spoonfuls of baking soda into the bottle.

3. Pour a small amount of vinegar into a small pitcher to control the amount of vinegar used. The pitcher is also easier for the child to use.

4. Ask a child to pour the vinegar into the bottle.

5. As the vinegar touches the baking soda, a chemical reaction takes place and a foaming volcano erupts.

6. Each time the child repeats the eruption, she should add an additional two spoonfuls of baking soda. The children can repeat this several times before they must pour out the liquid mixture and begin again.

7. Children are amazed at the chemical reaction. Have lots of baking soda and vinegar on hand. The children become excited when the chemical reaction takes place and want lots of turns.More to doOutdoor Play: Do this activity outside in the sandbox. Children can build up sand mountains around the bottle, then complete the process to make the volcano erupt.
