Materials

Yogurt containers or plastic cups

Clay, playdough or papier-mache

Vinegar

Baking soda

Red food coloring

Paint

Paintbrushes

Instructions

1. Give each child a cup to place right side up on a work surface. Let her form a mountain shape around the cup with the clay, playdough or papier-mache. Be sure she leaves a small opening at the top of the mountain shape.

2. When the mountain is dry, the children can decorate it with paint.

3. Now pour 1/4 cup (60 ml) of vinegar into each cup.

4. Add just a few drops of red food coloring.

5. Add 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of baking soda and watch the volcano erupt. The children will want to make the volcano again and again.More to doFood: Make a volcano snack by spreading cream cheese or peanut butter on a cracker and squeezing grape or strawberry jelly into a depression in the center.
