Instructions

1. If possible, take the children on a field trip to a grocery store and go to the
produce department. If it is not possible, do this activity in your science center.
2. Pick up a piece of fruit, such as an orange or a banana, and weigh it. Then pick
up another piece of the same fruit and ask the children what they think it will
weigh.
3. Weigh the fruit and record its weight on a piece of paper. Ask the children
what they think two pieces of fruit will weigh.
4. Weigh and record the data for two pieces of fruit.
5. Ask the children if they think an apple will weigh more or less than an orange.
6. Weigh and record the data, and do so with other produce.
7. When you return to class, make a chart of the results and compare them to
each other, asking the children which fruits were heaviest and lightest.
