Instructions

* October is International Zoo Month.
1. Draw empty cages and paddocks on construction paper. Cut out each
cage and staple in position on the bulletin board. You are creating an
empty zoo.
2. Talk to the children about how they would create their very own zoo.
What animals will live at the zoo? What will they eat and drink? What will
the enclosures need to be furnished with?
3. Have each child pick an animal to live at their zoo. Invite them to draw
their chosen animals on construction paper and cut them out.
4. Staple each animal into one of the enclosures. Make sure the animals
have food and water.
5. Ask them what else a zoo would need to have, for example, an admission
gate, a snack shop, souvenir store, picnic area, and a place for animal
shows. Add those to the display.
6. For fun and problem-solving experience, change the
display to present different problems. Perhaps an
animal escapes
or an animal
becomes sick.
Turn an animal
upside down in
its cage and ask
the children
what they should
do.
