blue and red gelatin
whipped cream large loaf pan or oblong plastic box paper platesInstructions
* Veteran's Day is November 11th.
1. Start this dessert before Veteran's Day, so the gelatin has time to set.
2. Make red and blue gelatin with the children, using a little less water than
the directions call for to make the gelatin quite firm.
3. Let the children take turns pouring a layer of gelatin into the large loaf
pan, allowing it to set before adding the next color.
4. Add layers of blue and red gelatin until the pan is full.
5. When the gelatin is solid, turn the pan upside down on a plate and
carefully remove it. Cut the striped gelatin into slices and put one on a
paper plate for each child, to represent a flag.
6. Show children a picture of the United States flag. Invite them to squirt tiny
drops of whipped cream in the top corner of their gelatin slices to
represent stars.
More to do Ask the children to find out if any of their family members or family friends
are veterans. Have them share the information with the group.
Books: Read books about Betsy Ross and the flag.
Group or Circle Time: Talk about the significance of the colors red, white,
and blue.
Music: Sing patriotic songs with the children.
