scissors (adult use only)

zip-lock bags

Instructions

l Set up the containers next to each other. Set the other materials
nearby and not in any certain order. On one container, write "Cans"
in large black letters. On another container, write "Plastic." On the
third, write "Paper." On the last container, write "No Recycle."
What To Do
1. Read the children a book about recycling (see list to the left for
suggestions) and then talk with the children about recycling. Ask the
children if they have ever recycled materials. Ask if their families have
different containers to separate
trash and recycling. Talk about the
importance of recycling for the
community.
2. Talk with the children about how
to know what to recycle. Show
the children recyclable and nonrecyclable
objects.
3. One by one, invite each child to
pick out an object and decide if it is
recyclable or not, and then put it into
the appropriate bin.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children describe why recycling is important?
l Can the children put materials in the correct bins?
