Instructions
When moving from circle time to center time, use this social skills activity.
1. When circle time is over, ask the children to stand in a circle.
2. Have one child stand on the outside of the circle. As the children sing the
following simple song, the child marches around the outside of the circle.
When the song ends, the child chooses a friend.
Choose a Friend (Tune: "Mary Had a Little Lamb")
(Child) needs to choose a friend,
Choose a friend, choose a friend.
(Child) needs to choose a friend,
A friend to go and play.
3. The first child chooses a center to play in. The children sing the song as the
chosen friend marches around the circle. The new child chooses another
friend at the end of the song, and then goes to a center.
4. Continue until all the children have been chosen and released to center time.
5. Use this activity in a variety of circumstances. When washing hands for
meals, call one child to wash and then ask that child to call another child.
Continue until all the children have been called.
