Instructions
1. Write each letter of the alphabet on index cards one letter per card. Write
the capital letters on 26 of the cards and the lower case letters on the other
26 cards.
2. Sit in a circle with the children. Stack the index cards face down. Randomly
select a card and put it into an envelope. Make sure the children do not see
which card you choose.
3. Play music while the children pass the envelope around the circle. When the
music stops, the child with the envelope takes out the card, identifies the
alphabet letter on it, and shows it to the other children.
4. Place a new letter in the envelope. Continue playing until each child has had
at least one turn to open the envelope. Focus on capital or lower case letters
at separate times until the children are thoroughly familiar with the alphabet.
More to do
Math: Instead of letters, write different numbers or draw different numbers of
objects on the cards.
Science: When studying animals, glue pictures of different animals on index
cards for identification.
