Instructions

What to do
1. Ahead of time, cut a turtle head, leg, and tail shapes from construction paper or trace them
onto paper.
2. When the children arrive, give them each a bowl. Have them turn their bowl upside-down and
paint the bottom and sides.
3. If the shapes are not cut ahead of time, ask the children to follow your outline and cut a head,
four legs, and a tail for their turtle.
4. When the bowl is dry, help the children glue or staple the shapes onto the edge of the bowl.
5. Punch a hole near the turtle's head. Tie a string through the hole; the string should be long
enough for the child to pull, but not so long that it will tangle easily. Make a small loop at the
other end of the string that the child can grasp.
More to do
Field trip: Visit a nature center or nearby pond and watch the turtles swim and sun themselves.
Movement: Have the children pretend they are turtles and hold a turtle relay race.
