Materials

seedling tree

large shovel

small shovels for the children

new soil (if needed)

Instructions

1. If possible, obtain sandpaper that has a sticky back. Cut it into pieces and
attach to craft sticks to make it easier for children to handle. This is optional;
you can also use regular sandpaper.
2. Obtain wood slices and make sure they are clean. Local tree trimmers or
carpenters are good sources for these.
3. During times when children are waiting for an activity or for others to finish,
they can sand the wood slices to make them smooth. This may take a few
days.
4. Discuss how the rings on the tree represent the "age" of the tree.
5. Encourage the children to paint or use markers to decorate their slices.
