Instructions

1. Read the children a book about leaves and the fall (see the list to the left for
examples). Talk with the children about why some leaves turn colors in the fall
while others stay green.
2. Teach the children the following poem. Encourage the children to create
actions that go along with each line:
Leaves Are Falling by Shirley Anne Ramaley
Leaves are falling all around,
Some have landed on the ground.
Red, green, and orange I see.
Colors bright as they can be.
I pick one up and take a look.
It's like a picture in my book.
3. As the children recite the poem,
encourage them to look for objects
that match the colors they mention.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Do the children understand why leaves fall in the autumn?
l Can the children recite the poem?
