Instructions

* Collect pictures of a variety of insects.
* Print poem on chart paper.
What to Do
1. Gather the children together in a circle.
2. Recite the following poem with the children:
Itsy, Bitsy Insects by Kathryn Hake
Some insects fly.
Some insects jump.
Some crawl along the ground.
Some insects buzz.
Some insects chirp.
Some never make a sound.
3. Talk with the children about the different ways that creatures move and sound
in the poem. Ask the children to identify an insect that performs each action.
4. Show the children images of the various insects throughout this portion of the
activity.
5. When the children identify a creature for each action, invite the children to
act out that action, saying "Let's pretend we are butterflies and fly around the
circle," or "Let's pretend we are grasshoppers and hop from place to place."
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Pass out pictures. Call each category one at a time. Ask the children to hold
up pictures of insects that fly, jump, or crawl.
* Can the children identify the images of individual insects by name?
