Materials

toy phones

discarded cell phones or landline phones (with keypads)

chalkboard and chalk or dryerase boards and markers (paper and pencil will also work)

Instructions

* Group the children in pairs and set out one phone and writing board per pair.
What to Do
1. Tell the children that they will be making "phone
calls," but to do this they need to know the "phone
numbers."
2. Have one child in the pair write a sequence of
numbers in a straight line on the writing board.
3. The second child then types the numbers into the
phone in order as written, saying each number aloud
as he types.
4. Once he has entered all the numbers, the child can
pretend to call someone.
5. Invite the children to take turns writing and dialing.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* Be sure to have enough phones; otherwise, use this
as a center activity. Three in a group does not work
as well as two.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can the children write some numbers?
* Can the children dial the numbers in the order they are written?
* Can the children speak the numbers aloud as they dial?
