Materials

two sets of blocks that show both numerals and letters

Instructions

1. Give the child the blocks and ask her to sort them so that one set shows numerals and one set shows letters.

2. Ask the child to look at the number blocks and choose the block with the numeral 1.

3. Have the child build a tower by choosing and placing the remaining blocks in the correct numerical order.

4. Ask the child to say the name of each numeral as she places the blocks in order.

5. Ask the child to build a second tower beside the first using only the letter blocks (beginning with "A") and placing them in alphabetical order.

6. Have the child say the name of each letter as she places the blocks.

7. Let the child knock over the towers and scatter them. Ask her to build a big tower using all the blocks.

8. When she is finished, ask her to find and point to numerals and letters as you say the names.More to do Ask the children to use the blocks to make patterns like the following: one numeral, two letters; one letter, one numeral, two letters, and so on.
