Materials
set of cardboard number pieces with big black numbers on them from 1 to 10 (or 20)
several small toys (plastic animals or cars) bag boxInstructions
* Place number cards in a bag and a variety of small toys in a box.
What to Do
1. Have a special "number time" once a week. Designate a different child each
week to be the special person in charge of the weekly number.
2. Start "number time" with the following number song:
The Number Song by Freya Zellerhoff
(Tune: "Do You Know the Muffin Man?")
Do you know what time it is? Do you know what time it is?
What time it is, what time it is? It's time to learn our number!
3. Blindfold the designated child or ask him to close his eyes. Let the child pick a
number without looking, so it will be a surprise.
4. Announce the number of the day to everyone: "And today's number is ____!"
5. The designated child picks as many plastic animals (or other toys) as the day's
special number calls for. The child arranges the animals or toys on a special
display area (a shelf or a desk).
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* For advanced classes, have the children group the plastic animals by twos or
fives.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can the children recognize the number and count up to that number?
* Can the children count and group items by twos
